In Shooting an Elephant George Orwell is a foreigner in the quilted of British-controlled Burma. While he despises imperialism and is on the side of the Burmese, his experiences with local natives present made it difficult to sympathize with them. As the passage progresses, Orwell is tending(p) an assignment to deal with a rampaging elephant. With the eyes of thousands of natives on him, he is too intimida ted to do anything other than what the crowd wants. In hopes of pleasing the demanding crowd, those who he is supposed to hold power everyplace force him into action. By embracing his position of power, he is in turn controlled by the weak.
